How to file your Federal and state extensions
Below is a guide to help you navigate the process for the IRS and popular states:
Internal Revenue Service (IRS) – File Form 4868, “Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.” More information and online filing available here: IRS Extension Information.
Important Reminder
Filing an extension gives you more time to submit your tax return, but it does not extend the deadline for paying taxes owed. If you anticipate owing taxes, estimate the amount and submit payment by the original due date to avoid penalties and interest.
Want AnchorBridge Tax to File Your Extension?
Based on the documents you provide, we will estimate your potential tax liability, which is needed to file the extension. Please send us all the tax documents you have available. Complex tax situations may require additional time.
There is a $170 filing fee to file an extension.
Your preparer’s ability to file an extension depends on their availability. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE.
Make IRS and State Tax Payments
If you owe money to the IRS or a state, you have the following payment options:
Electronic Withdrawal (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) – If you want to make payments using Electronic Withdrawal, you must advise your tax preparer before your tax return is e-filed.
Online Payments – To pay the IRS, click here.
Vouchers – Follow the instructions on the vouchers. Use the correct address and payment amount, and submit by the due date.
Payment Arrangements – If you are unable to make a payment by its due date for any reason, contact the IRS or state as soon as possible. A payment plan is strongly advised and will reduce the severity of any late payment penalties.
Visit your IRS Individual Online Account to view balances, make payments, and manage payment plans.
Get IRS and State Tax Refunds
If you are owed a refund from the IRS or a state, you will receive it by:
Electronic Deposit (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) – If you set up an electronic deposit with your tax preparer, you will receive your refund directly to your bank account. Due to mail and identity theft problems, the IRS is recommending direct deposit for faster and more secure payment.
Mailed Check – The IRS will mail you a check if you have not set up direct deposit.
Track My Refund
Visit our Track My Refund page for links and phone numbers to the IRS and state agencies.
IRS Refunds – The IRS estimates that refunds take about 21 days after the IRS has accepted your e-filed tax return.
State Refunds – State refunds vary by state and usually have a similar time frame as IRS refunds.
